News

Representation of women in STEM varies widely across professions.  A recent study shows that 74% of STEM-related health care roles are held by women whereas women are only 15% of the engineering workforce.

NASA is making great strides in employing women in STEM positions.

NBC News Learn has created a 10-part video series call “Changing the Games: Women in STEM at the Tokyo Olympics”, featuring women in STEM careers who work with U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls.

Many of the key players in the development of the Covid-19 vaccines are women scientists!

Women in technology often temper their confidence with modesty in order to avoid a reputation for being difficult, overbearing or aggressive.

The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering will take place April 24 through May 2 on-line with free livestreaming events and special events including talks from Women in STEAM.

We have all heard that the pandemic has not been good for women career-wise, but could it be especially bad for women in STEM/STEAM careers?

And the remote-learning environment caused by the pandemic has been detrimental to STEM/STEAM education as well.

As part of the United States Mint’s American Women Quarters Program, astronaut Dr. Sally Ride will be one of the first women honored and will be celebrated on a 2022 quarter.

Being part of a pit crew is a STEM/STEAM career!  Beth Paretta is the owner of Paretta Autosports, the first entrant in the Indy 500 from a team that is female-owned, female-driven and with a largely female crew!

How do we cultivate the next generation of female STEM/STEAM thinkers?

What do you see when asked to picture a scientist?  Probably a man in a lab coat!  Research shows that when we see people who look like us doing something that we want to do, we can actually envision ourselves doing that same thing and believe that we can do it.  On April 14 NOVA on PBS is presenting “Picture a Scientist”, documenting researchers exposing discrimination and working to make science more inclusive.

Registration is open for the Davis Youth Robotics team’s on-line Summer RoboCamps.  These camps are intended for students entering the fourth through eighth grades. 

Florida State University’s Graduate Women in STEM organization is presenting the seventh annual “Art in STEM” exhibit – and yes, it is virtual this year.  This exhibit allows the viewer to explore the beauty and artistry of science and showcases the importance of adding the “A” for arts to STEM, creating STEAM, and opening the door of science to a larger population.

This week, the United Arab Emeriates announced the first female Arab astronaut.  Nora Al Matrooshi is part of the second group of astronauts in the UAE Astronaut Programme.

Alena Wicker is 12 years old, soon to graduate high school, attend Arizona State University and double major in astronomical and planetary science and chemistry with dreams of becoming a NASA engineer.

Students with autism who attend college are more likely than their peers to earn STEM degrees and enter into corresponding careers.

Australia has a great program – “STEM Professionals in Schools” – where STEM industry professionals are invited to volunteer in schools to share their experiences and perspectives with students.  Listen to this this episode of Teacher Magazine’s “School Improvement” podcast for conversations with Robbie Bell, a volunteer, and Lynne Hanlon, an educator who is facilitating Robbie’s participation in the program.

STEAM

Science Fiction writing is a great example of the power of adding the “A” for “Arts” to STEM to create STEAM.  STEM and STEAM  education and careers are far more encompassing than what we generally think of when we think about STEM.  Read about Octavia Butler, a Science Fiction writer who is the namesake of the Mars Perseverance Rover landing site.

The 47th Sun ‘n’ Fun Aerospace Expo will take place in Lakeland, Florida April 13-18.  This non-profit seeks to raise $1M to close a funding gap in the construction of Project SkyLab, an expansion of the Florida Air Museum for the Aerospace Center for Excellence.
